Two Cases of Spinal Tanycytic Ependymoma Associated with Neurofibromatosis Type 2

چکیده
IntroductIon Tanycytic ependymoma is a rare subtype of the World Health Organization Grade II ependymoma most commonly found in the cervical and thoracic segments of the spinal cord. Spinal tumors in neurofibromatosis type 2 (NF‐2) can be intramedullary, extramedullary, or associated with the nerve roots, and there may be multiple tumors at multiple locations in the spine. The histology of these tumors includes meningiomas, schwannomas, ependymomas, and neurofibroma.[1] However, spinal tanycytic ependymomas associated with NF‐2 are extremely rare, with only four cases reported in the English literature.[1‐4] In this study, we report two rare cases of spinal tanycytic ependymoma associated with NF‐2 and provide a review of the literature.

Senile tanycytic ependymoma of the spinal cord: a case report and literature review
Tanycytic ependymoma is a rare subtype of ependymoma that most commonly occurs in the brain. Senile tanycytic ependymoma that arises from the spinal cord is extremely rare. The present study reported the case of a 65-year-old woman who presented with a 4-day history of numbness in both lower limbs accompanied by an increased urinary frequency and constipation. Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) o...

Ependymoma is a slowly growing tumor in children and young adults originating from the wall of the ventricles or from the spinal canal that is composed of neoplastic ependymal cells. Tanycytic ependymoma is a rare variant of ependymoma usually arising in the intra medullary spine. The World Health Organization classifies the tanycytic ependymoma as a grade II tumor. The diagnosis of tanycytic e...

A 6-year-old boy with focal seizures and headache. Diagnostic imaging demonstrated a right subcortical parietooccipital heterogeous expansive lesion, with growth into the adjacent ventricular system (Fig 1). Histological analysis led to the diagnosis of tanycytic ependymoma, as tumor cells have features resembling tanycytes (Fig 2). More than half of these tumors occur in the spinal cord. Supra...

OBJECTIVE AND IMPORTANCE We report a rare case of the tanycytic variant of intramedullary ependymoma. Tanycytes are the common progenitor cells of both ependymal cells and astrocytes. These particular elongate unipolar and bipolar ependymal cells extend from the ventricular lumen to the surface of the nervous system. It is extremely important, in terms of both management and prognosis, to disti...

Ependymomas constitute the most common type of primary spinal cord tumors, and are subclassified as myxopapillary ependymoma, classic ependymoma, and anaplastic ependymoma. Ependymomas can be further subclassified based on morphologic phenotype: cellular, papillary, tanycytic, clear cell, pigmented and epithelioid. Giant cell ependymoma (GCE), a rare variant, has recently been described. Report...
